Hybrid large‐eddy simulation with adaptive downstream anisotropic eddy viscosity model

Abstract Turbulence pervades most flows of engineering interest, and its prediction remains a challenge on both accuracy cost. One promising predictive approach that reduces cost combines large‐eddy simulation (LES) with based Reynolds averaged Navier–Stokes equations (RANS). This study presents method to overcome stability issues associated these hybrid LES‐RANS methods. The developed involves extracting the stresses from upstream LES solution then using information convert downstream RANS model scalar eddy‐viscosity an anisotropic nonlinear model. differs tensorial by being independent coordinate system. was evaluated computing film cooling flat plate coolant injected through one row circular holes. Results obtained show instabilities at LES‐to‐RANS interface be eliminated. Also, yielded solutions compare reasonably well those LES, even though significant portion flow is computed adapted instead which significantly reduced number grid points computational time needed.
